Online classroom etiquette a priority for GOTS International School
Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School’s online programme next year will be fun despite observing strict online learning etiquette.
Top of the list is must wear their school uniform (one of four colours) from Mondays to Thursday. They can use their own attire on casual Fridays.
It may seem a small thing to insist on uniforms but it is to instil discipline.
A 2016 study by two members of the Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, examined test scores and student behaviour in the United States, Canada and 37 other countries to determine whether uniforms affect student discipline.
The researchers found that the highest-performing students are from countries where school uniforms are mandatory.
They are also more disciplined and listen significantly better, do better in examinations and classes start on time.
Punctuality is another key proponent of GOTS International School’s online programme with classes starting and ending as scheduled.
Classes are from 8.15am until 1pm on weekdays.
The new online programme for Year 2 to Year 9 students will have six compulsory subjects – English, Maths, Science, Geography, History and Bahasa Melayu.
For Year 2 scholars, History will be replaced with Phonics.
The most important ‘tenet’ at GOTS International School is respect.
“We wish to stress that filial piety and respect are core principles at GOTS. We have always raised our students the way we were raised – to respect our parents and teachers,” said co-founder Veronica Shepherdson.
“As much as parents demand respect from their children, we appreciate that parents too accord teachers the same respect lest it serves as fuel for students to disrespect their teachers.”
Other online classroom etiquettes the scholars have to follow are:
* Students ensure cameras remain switched on at all times – unless it makes the Internet connection slow in which case the school has to be informed.
* Recording GOTS online teaching sessions are not permitted.
* Students not allowed to eat, get dressed, or carry out any activity which is not allowed in a physical classroom.
The intake for GOTS’ new online programme is now open.
