Coach Fatin hits the kitchen to overcome Raya blues

Like many Malaysians, this year’s Hari Raya celebrations will be different for Nur Fatin Athirah Mohd Narawai.

The Bahasa Melayu coach at Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS), who hails from Kuala Terengganu, will be spending it away from her family due to the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“We will be having our mid-term holidays from May 22 and while I want to go back to my kampung, it may not be possible as cross-border travel is not allowed,” said Fatin, who has been with GOTS since last May.

To occupy her time and lessen her sadness, Fatin said she is trying to cook some of Terengganu’s famous delicacies and bake traditional Hari Raya kuih.

“I’ve tried making nasi dagang and will be making some of the kuih my family usually makes during the celebration,” she said.

“I have been experimenting since MCO started. There is still a lot of work to do before I get them right!”

There is a glimmer of hope for Fatin to actually return to her kampung – after Hari Raya – as the government is allowing spouses to travel if they work in different states.

Her husband (Mohd Taufik Mohd Noor), whose family home is next to her parents’, will resume work in Kertih, Terengganu next month.

As such, she could be allowed to visit him – but it may not be right for them to visit their parents as there is a need to minimise contact with the elderly to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

“I have resigned myself to having a lonely Hari Raya with my husband. I may seek more information from the relevant authorities to see if I can go visit him during our mid-term break.

“The important thing now is to follow the rules and guidelines of the MCO.”

Separately, when asked how she is coping with GOTS’ online coaching, Fatin said: “It’s a bit tiring as we have to sit in front of the computer the whole day.”

“I prefer to be in school but we can only do that when it is safe.”

For now, Fatin will be spending her time perfecting her cooking skills.
