13 Nov Coffee with GOTS
Monthly assessments get top marks from parents
It was an intimate gathering with some parents to update them on the progress of their children ahead of the year-end examinations from Nov 18-22.
Although Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) makes it a point to have monthly assessments for its scholars, co-founder Veronica Shepherdson felt having “coffee” would give her team a chance to get to know the parents even better.
Joining her were coaches Sheena Moorthy, Irene Malar Abel, S. Dharshini and Ranjita Mohgan as several parents from Years 4, 5 and 6 attended the session.
“As far as I know, we are the only school to have monthly assessments,” said Shepherdson.
“This is done to make sure the scholars are always on their toes and for us to know what needs to be done to ensure their academic needs are well taken care of.
“The feedback from the parents has been positive as they get to chart their children’s progress regularly instead of waiting for the end of each term.
“We do have lots of fun in GOTS – our annual concert, Halloween and Deepavali celebrations recently – but we also make sure learning never stops”
Although the year-end examinations are next week, the feedback from the scholars was surprising – “relax, we got this.”
“When I asked my son (Myo Sett Kyaw) if he was prepared for his exams, he told me ‘chill dad, I’ve got this’.
“Most parents would not normally know how to react to such statements but I’ve been monitoring his monthly progress reports and am confident he is on track,” said Kyaw Zin Kyaw, father of Myo Sett, who won the Outstanding Academic Performance for the year in 2018.
His view was echoed by Mohd Fakaruzi Che Rus, whose daughter Nur Eliza, has shown tremendous improvement since joining GOTS last year.
“It was nice to meet Shepherdson and talk to her about the school and its plans for the future,” said Fakaruzi, who discovered GOTS on the Internet.
“I was searching for schools when I came across GOTS. We visited the school and were impressed by the teaching methodology and the staff.
“I have no regrets coming here as Eliza has ‘found her voice’ because GOTS encourages them to speak up and give their opinion – this is something different.
“The fact that I can monitor Eliza’s progress each month gives me confidence what is being done in school is working as I can see the improvement.”
Anushah Pillai, who has three children in GOTS – Keshhav Parthiban, Yaashini Parthiban and Yakesh Parthiban – also welcomed the monthly assessments.
“I have three kids to monitor in GOTS and the monthly assessments make it so much easier to know what they are doing in school,” said Anushah.
“It is a wonderful idea and something all schools should look at. It gives parents peace of mind as they would know where their kids are at academically and what needs to be done to improve.”
