Family values convinced Nasrinah to pick GOTS
We often hear parents describing Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) as “a home away from home” and it being “family”.
In Nasrinah Khan’s case, it holds true in more ways than one as she considers GOTS’ ballet coach Michelle Shepherdson her “daughter”.
This is because Shepherdson is the ice-skating coach of Nasrinah’s daughter Maryam Mahmud, who is studying in GOTS.
“Yes, it’s true I consider Michelle my ‘other’ daughter as she and Maryam are so close,” said Nasrinah.
“This connection was the biggest reason why I enrolled Maryam in GOTS which was co-founded by Michelle’s mother, Veronica.
“Knowing the family and the values they hold dear, I knew they would impart them to their students.
“My daughter has learnt so much from Michelle and now at GOTS, she is learning so much more and has become an even better student.”
Michelle has been coaching Maryam for more than five years and they have claimed several gold medals in that time, including one at last year’s Skate Malaysia.
For the record, Skate Malaysia attracted 300 skaters from Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaysia.
Nasrinah added the programmes at GOTS which encourages scholars to express themselves artistically has helped Maryam’s ice-skating performances.
“She is actually quite shy but the classes such as speech and drama and public speaking help to make her more confident.”
Speech and drama classes are part of the Chill Out lessons in GOTS.
Other lessons include taekwondo, Taiko drums and hip-hop dance while ice-skating and cheerleading will be introduced this year.
Chill Out classes are a creative and innovative approach to the implementation of extra-curricular activities and help to energise the scholars before they continue with their studies.
“Maryam also enjoys the other lessons such as financial literacy (FinancialSmart) and SHINE (the first experiential emotional intelligence focused training framework in Southeast Asia) which can be found at GOTS,” said Nasrinah.
“These extra lessons have real-world applications and do wonders for those studying in GOTS.”
