03 Aug Gardening
Don’t be surprised if you hear our scholars at the City of Elmina Campus, Shah Alam singing praises of dirt!
‘Dirt made my lunch,
Dirt made my lunch.
Thank you Dirt, thanks a bunch,
For my salad, my sandwich
My milk and my munch ’cause
Dirt, you made my lunch.’
No, Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) coaches and students did not go crazy when they were away during the Movement Control Order (MCO).
Instead, these cutie pies are singing a song to celebrate a new gardening project and them building a compost bin.
“The kids (pre-primary and primary) are earth warriors … just doing their bit,” said Head of Pre-primary Chithra Nair of the school’s gardening project – all done with proper physical distancing, of course.
“Not only have we started our own little garden, but we built our own compost bin, too.”
The kids sing “Dirt made my lunch’ – a popular nursery rhyme about gardening – while marching to the compost bin with waste material from their homes.
But why has GOTS opted to get its scholars to start their own gardens?
Well, it is said a garden is a grand teacher as it teaches patience, watchfulness, industry, thrift and trust — values which are at the heart of this unique international school in Shah Alam.
“This is something we are implementing this term since coming back from the MCO,” said GOTS co-founder Veronica Shepherdson.
“They will be planting vegetables which they can then bring home. It is also rewarding for them to see their efforts come to fruition.
“We want to teach them responsibility while making them aware of earth matters.”
Shepherdson said GOTS is also planning other activities for the scholars in the post-MCO world.
“Since returning to school, we have had to put on hold several of our programmes. We decided on gardening for the younger scholars as one of the replacements.
“We are planning more activities to ensure GOTS remains Definitely Different.”
