Our co-founder, Dr Veronica Shepherdson, recently gave a talk to more than 20 students from Curtin University on how to prepare a powerful curriculum vitae (CV).

She also shared her life’s journey, the decision to start Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School, and tips on entreprenology.

“While a CV provides a detailed overview of a student’s academic and professional history, you do not need to stop there,” said Dr Shepherdson.

“Many employers now think outside of the box and look at more than just academics. In their minds, everyone is a high-achiever with high grades.

“So, you have to put in something that makes you stand out, or be different. Something that makes the employers take notice.

“If you are a fantastic dancer or skater, and have won awards, put that in your CV.

“Any of your achievements or awards, no matter how small, will make a difference, especially as you are just starting in your work life.”

She added that as a person grows and accomplishes more, that person can then prioritise what needs to be in the CV.

“Your goal in creating your CV is to help the employment agency see your strengths and qualities,” said Dr Shepherdson.

“Many employers are looking beyond academic qualifications.

“Your CV will grow with your career and should be updated regularly. It is your academic identity.”

Besides providing the students with a template to build a ‘powerful CV’, Dr Shepherdson shared what it means to be an entrepreneur.

She added that a strong tagline would help an entrepreneur grab attention.

She said GOTS International School’s tagline of ‘Definitely Different’ helps it stand out – delivering an educational experience that is different from its rivals.

“An entrepreneur is much more than just being a businessman or a businesswoman. It is about how you can improve on a business idea and make it different. ”

GOTS coaches are often invited to deliver talks and lectures to students outside campus, including higher learning institutions.

Apart from Dr Shepherdson, GOTS International School’s Head of Science, Dr Vicknesha Santhirasegaram, was also invited to an ‘Alumni Sharing Session’ by the Department of Physical Sciences, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, in November.

Dr Vicknesha shared her experience to show the different career paths and various options available to those with a Science degree.
