At Global Oak Tree Scholars, it is not enough having the best coaches as we demand excellence.
That is a mantra GOTS co-founder Veronica Shepherdson has drilled into her ‘family’ at the international school in Shah Alam.
“It’s so easy to say our coaches are great because we have A+ coaches who possess early childhood education diploma/certification, CIDTL (Cambridge International Diploma for Teacher Learners) and NLP for the Academics certification.
“We don’t believe in empty words. Our action speak for itself as the coaches go out of their way to deliver excellent education. We believe in bringing out the leader in a child,” she said.
GOTS also makes it a point to hire coaches who can think outside the box as it doesn’t want those who just follow the textbooks and cannot improvise.
One example of this was last year’s Deepavali celebrations where the coaches performed a dance in front of the whole school.
While they were having fun, it was also a lesson to their scholars that although performing in public is scary, it can be overcome.
Shepherdson said at the time it was a new experience for her.
“I was very moved by the coaches’ performance. I had tears in my eyes. You would never find a team of coaches as we have here,” she said then.
“I have never had the opportunity or delight to see my teachers perform for me.
“This is why they are so special. They lead by example.”
This is one of the daily lessons in GOTS – where building self-confidence and nurturing a love of the arts is encouraged.
The coaches have also given up their weekends to conduct workshops and courses not just for the scholars but also for the public to help spread the word about this ‘Definitely Different’ international school.
Among the activities they planned were English, Science and Mathematics workshops as well as a Junior TEDx Talk and Weekend at the Heart of GOTS.
Speaking of top-notch coaches, GOTS stands out as it has Dr Vicknesha Santhirasegaram, a PhD holder who is Head of Science.
It is near impossible to find PhD holders willing to teach school children but once again, GOTS is leading the way.
But it is not just about paper qualifications. GOTS coaches treat their scholars as adults and have two-way communication with them which makes it easier to share knowledge.
The feedback from parents has been surprising and delightful over how fast their children have improved and this is something Shepherdson takes great pride in.
