GOTS’ primary scholars stepping up during MCO
Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) will start adding FinancialSmart, music and hip-hop dance as part of its online studies during the Movement Control Order (MCO).
This will be in addition to English, Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, Science, History and Geography which were introduced through the school’s online studies programme since the MCO began on March 18.
The primary scholars will also be more active online with live sessions with coaches every Thursday and Friday.
“The primary and secondary scholars have been in constant contact with their coaches. Those in secondary also have live sessions with the coaches,” said GOTS co-founder Veronica Shepherdson.
“They have long discussions either via video conferencing or voice notes and as such, we have decided to get the younger ones more involved with live sessions.”
She added GOTS began only with primary scholars in 2018 and a lot of thought was put in the lesson plans to make the school stand out from its competitors.
“At GOTS primary, we aim to produce well-rounded students who will not only score high marks academically but also be able to stand on their own,” said Shepherdson.
“Our lessons are more activity-based as we encourage scholars to think.
“We help unearth their leadership skills like communication, problem-solving and handling criticisms.
“Word got out as to how we are ‘Definitely Different’ and soon we added the pre-primary and secondary scholars.”
She said GOTS has also tweaked its primary lesson plans to suit the pre-primary and secondary schools but the objective is the same – to produce scholars who will be able to stand on their own.
“Academics is very important but we need scholars who can think for themselves when the going gets tough.
“Our lessons from pre-primary right up to secondary enable this.
“That is why we could adapt to e-learning as soon as the MCO was announced.”
