Honesty is serious business at GOTS
Honesty is the best policy. This is something that is put to the test at Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) every day.
In its cafeteria at the primary campus in Elmina East and the secondary campus in Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam is an ‘Honesty Corner’ where scholars can purchase food and beverages.
What is unique is no one oversees the till. Prices are displayed and the scholars pay accordingly. It is based on trust.
“At GOTS there is a bond between the coaches and scholars.
“From the very first day they step through our doors, we teach them love and honesty are important characteristics,” said GOTS co-founder Veronica Shepherdson.
“We show this in many ways, one of which is by having the Honesty Corner where they can buy items and pay for them without anyone monitoring them.
“We have several scholars ‘in charge’ of the inventory to make sure there is enough food and beverages.
“I forwarded the initial capital to get the Honesty Corner started. The idea is for it to be self-sustaining as the profits will be ploughed back into the ‘shop’.”
Shepherdson added with GOTS treating financial literacy seriously via its FinancialSmart lessons, the Honesty Corner would teach the scholars some aspects of business.
“The scholars are taught the value of money from Year 1 and the Honesty Corner is a way of practising what they are being taught,” she said.
“From opening a bank account, learning how to earn interest and not spending on unnecessary items, we are teaching them the value of money.
“As they get older, there are other financial lessons they can learn, one of which is about business.
“Having an Honesty Corner teaches them how to ensure they have enough products, analyse which products sell well, and which ones they can probably get rid of the next time they buy new items.
“It is a practical way of learning. And best of all, they are having fun!”
