Internet safety workshop opens eyes of GOTS International School scholars

Maryam Mahmud and Eugene Kua feel more confident online after attending Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School’s ‘What You Need To Know About Social Media’ workshop.

The workshop on Aug 23, was for scholars and their parents to learn about the ‘Positive and Negative Effects of Social Media’.

Among the topics were, how to avoid catfishing, or identity theft.

After the talk by Kelly Thomas, ABB’s Digital Operation Centre Manager, Robotics and Discrete Automation, the participants took a quiz to gauge if they understood the workshop.

Maryam Mahmud and Eugene Kua were adjudged winners, but it was only last week that the school delivered the prizes to the Year 9 scholars.

Maryam said the workshop opened her eyes to the dangers of the internet.

“I now feel more conscious and self-aware on what I post on my social media accounts,” said Maryam.

“I also learnt that before posting a picture with friends, ideally, I have to ask for consent, as some may not want to have their pictures posted on my feed or online.”

Eugene echoed Maryam’s sentiments and said the workshop raised some pertinent points about internet safety.

“It was good for everyone to know about the dangers of social media, and for us to spread awareness and discuss the topic with one another,” said Eugene.

“I found it interesting. There should be more of such workshops in the future.”
