Dr Vicknesha Santhirasegaram is on a mission to make science fun at Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School’s laboratory.

Dr Vicknesha, the school’s Head of Science, is planning several experiments now that the scholars are back in school.

“Before the Chinese New Year, we had a whole week of experiments at the laboratory for all the age groups,” said Dr Vicknesha.

“It was the first time back in the lab for them after a year of online learning. We plan to do more lab work this year.”

In the week after the Chinese New Year, the Year 8s had the opportunity to work with the microscope under the supervision of coach Irene Malar Abel.

They had slides of a honeybee’s sting, hydra, liver, corn stem and smokers’ lung cells, among other things.

There were many “oohs” and “aahs” as the scholars examined the slides.

“Wow, so cool and colourful. I did not expect a corn stem to look like that,” exclaimed scholar Haresha Kaur.

“Why is the lung that colour?” asked Daphne Ho, as she zoomed in for a closer look.

Irene then explained the difference between a smoker’s lungs and that of a non-smoker.

Lalith Kumar, who initially had a slight problem with his microscope, was amazed by the level of detail that they could see via the microscope.

Another scholar, Riyaa Reuban, was busy snapping pictures to show to her classmates who had opted for online learning.

“I am glad they had fun with the microscopes,” said Dr Vicknesha.

“We need to make science fun for scholars so they would want to learn more about the subject.”

Separately, GOTS International School co-founder, Dr Veronica Shepherdson, said the school was offering parents the option of online learning due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

“The majority of the scholars are back in school. Only a handful have opted to continue through online lessons,” she said.

“Some have babies at home, so the parents do not want to take the chance. I do not blame them.

“The most important thing is that they are up to speed in their lessons.”
