23 Aug Medals galore for GOTS at international taekwondo competition
Five representatives from Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) competed in their first taekwondo competition last week and all came away with medals.
Although nervous, the quintet didn’t disappoint as each of them won a medal in the forms (Poomsae) event.
Madilynn Tan won a gold medal while Jayden Nishaan Sandhu, Myo Sett Kyaw, Ho Wern Xuen were silver medallists and Kestryl Joan Dewa Balan a bronze medallist.
All five have been training under Master Mark Lim at the international school since last year.
Lim, a former Selangor exponent, entered them for the 4th International Heros Taekwondo Cup, an invitational tournament which attracted a record 1,700 exponents from 10 countries.
The event was supported by the Education and Youth and Sports Ministries.
“I wanted to expose them to high-level competition and this was the perfect platform as they had events for grassroots exponents,” said Lim.
“I also wanted them and their parents to witness the other type of taekwondo – sparring (gyeorugi or matseogi).
Here’s what GOTS scholars had to say about their feat:
Madilynn Tan: I was nervous as I waited so long for my turn. It was worth it in the end and I can’t believe I won gold in front of my parents!
Jayden Nishaan Sandhu: It was amazing. I told myself I needed to remember all the moves and I’m glad I managed to do so.
Ho Wern Xuen: I’m so happy. To win a medal in my first event is very encouraging. I hope we get to enter more competitions.
Myo Sett Kyaw: It was a very nervous wait but I’m glad we took part in this competition. I’m looking forward to more events.
Kestryl Joan Dewa Balan: It was a good experience. There were so many people I was nervous but I’m happy to win a medal.
