Music shines on Sheena’s life

Sheena Moorthy has always loved singing. She was musically inclined from a very young age and used to sing whenever she could and wherever she was.

It was no surprise she would make music her career and now, she cannot wait to pass on her knowledge to students of Global Oak Tree Scholars’ (GOTS) secondary when it opens its doors in January.

Now 29, she has been a full-time music teacher for more than five years.

She started by coaching children one-on-one before joining an international school in Bukit Damansara.

“After a couple of years of private tuition, I applied to join an international school in 2015.

“It was good exposure as I went from teaching one-on-one to a class of 20-25 students,” says Sheena.

“I have learnt many things about teaching in a classroom but after three years, I knew it was time for a new challenge.

“It so happened an opportunity at GOTS came along and I did not hesitate to accept it.

“GOTS will be different as we have other musical components to factor into our lessons and I cannot wait to get started.”

Sheena, who is proficient in vocal and piano teaching, will play a big role at GOTS as she will be teaching other musical instruments as well.

She says the scholars at GOTS will be exposed to several activities which are different from other international schools.

One such activity is Chill Out, a fun, interactive way of breaking the monotony of studying.

Comprising activities such as speech and drama, taekwondo, ballet, Taiko drums and hip-hop dance among others, these mini-breaks occur midway through a school day.

Music will be a key element in Chill Out and Sheena says even the most musically challenged will not find it difficult to keep up.

“At GOTS, we will take into account a scholar’s musical ability so no one gets left behind.

“We will ensure everyone will enjoy themselves and be able to understand what we teach.”
