You will not find ordinary teachers at Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS).

Why?

Its founder Veronica Shepherdson said to join the international school, a teacher or coach as they are known in GOTS, must possess “something special”.

“They must have the ‘it’ factor as we need coaches who can think outside the box. We do not want those who just follow the textbooks and cannot improvise,” explained Shepherdson.

She said GOTS prides itself in being different from its rivals and coaches must be able to motivate and inspire the scholars.

“At GOTS we don’t teach, we coach. While coaching, we suggest. While suggesting, we inspire.

“This is something I want all my coaches to follow.”

This is why Shepherdson has been selective when hiring coaches for the international secondary school which opens in January at Plaza Jelutong in Bukit Jelutong.

She added a coach at GOTS must be able to communicate with the scholars and not talk down to them.

“We are here to educate and prepare them for the real world. Teenagers will appreciate us more if we treat them with respect.

“That is why I will make it a point to hire only those who will respect the scholars under their care,” she said.

“Our coaches will give individual attention to the scholars and assess how best to go about teaching them.”
