GOTS Dr Vicknesha dispels misconceptions about career options open to Science degree holders
Our Head of Science, Dr Vicknesha Santhirasegaram, was recently invited to an ‘Alumni Sharing Session’ by the Department of Physical Sciences, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC).
Dr Vicknesha, who has been with Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School since August 2018, was one of the two speakers at the event, which attracted more than 80 students and lecturers.
“I was quite surprised when asked to be a speaker, but I did not hesitate,” said Dr Vicknesha, who has a double major in chemistry and biology from Campbell University in the United States.
“I earned my Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in Science at TARUC before pursuing my degree at Campbell University.
“I wanted to do my part to help the students.”
During the talk, alumni members shared their experiences with students to show the different career paths and various options available.
“It was an eye-opener for many who did not realise that they could go into other fields with a Science degree, such as teaching, or sales,” said Dr Vicknesha, who earned her PhD in Food Science from University Malaya (UM).
“I received many interesting questions from the students. Initially, there were supposed to be four speakers, but two pulled out.
“The other speaker was a senior product manager who specialises in sales.
“Many of the students then realised that just because you have a degree in science, does not mean you will end up working in a laboratory, or doing research.”
Dr Vicknesha said a number of the students were intrigued by her work at GOTS International School, where she created lesson plans for the primary and secondary schools, and helped set up two laboratories at the secondary campus in Plaza Jelutong.
“It was good to meet the students, albeit virtually, as it was a great way to network and let the students know of the options available to them.
“It was a good session, and I would like to thank TARUC for inviting me.”
