Not many schools, if any, offer speech and drama, taekwondo, ballet, Taiko drums and hip-hop dance for free as part of their syllabus.
Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) provides that and more. There is also children’s boot camp, SHINE and FinancialSmart.
SHINE – the first experiential emotional intelligence-focused training framework in Southeast Asia – teaches students essential life skills while FinancialSmart teaches students to be financially independent.
Then again, GOTS is no ordinary school.
It is definitely different as its academic offering is deeply reflective and constantly evolving to impart academic knowledge and skills, accentuated with innovative character-strengthening syllabi.
“Education and paper qualifications are important but so too is the wellbeing of the scholars,” says GOTS founder Veronica Shepherdson.
“We believe in having well-rounded scholars who can excel in other fields besides academia.
“That is why we have several activities midway through a school day to recharge the children’s batteries.”
She says this in reference to Funky Munky, a unique programme with a creative and innovative approach towards extra-curricular activities.
While other establishments fix extra-curricular hours for after academic lessons, GOTS’ cheekily coined Funky Munky, is held between 12.15pm and 1pm.
On Mondays, it is speech and drama with actress Alesia Dhana. Taekwondo on Tuesdays is taught by former Selangor Malaysia Games exponent Mark Lim.
The girls have ballet on Wednesday with experienced coach Nancy Goh while the boys can opt to learn Taiko drums under principal Gerard Abisheganaden.
Abisheganaden takes centrestage on Thursday with Taiko drums for boys and girls while Friday sees hip-hop dancing under the energetic Nicole Ann Beins.
“We try to offer as much variety as possible. We want to stimulate the children’s minds and make them eager to learn new things,” says Shepherdson.
“One reason we have Funky Munky midway through the school day is to break the monotony of learning.
“Doing fun activities will ‘energise their brains’ and enable them to absorb lessons better.”
