24 Jul Return to School
It was a return to school with a difference as the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we do things.
At Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS), hugging and showing affection for each other used to be the norm as GOTS considers everyone family.
But now, face mask/shields, hand sanitisers and physical distancing are the ‘new norm’.
“It breaks my heart that I can’t greet the scholars with a warm hug,” said co-founder Veronica Shepherdson.
“But we understand the importance of staying safe, particularly at this time, when the number of cases seems to be rising.
“I’m just glad that the scholars are back in school as we really missed them during the Movement Control Order (MCO).”
With the reopening of schools, the standard operating procedures at GOTS include:
* taking temperatures of scholars before they get down from their vehicles. Students with a temperature of 37.5 and above are sent home.
* wearing face masks at all times.
* sanitisers and washing hands.
* fogging/sanitising classrooms at the end of each day.
* physical distancing at all times.
* no assemblies.
* food to be consumed in classrooms.
GOTS has also ordered face shields for everyone and these will be distributed soon.
“Face shields are better and more comfortable for the scholars,” said Shepherdson.
During the MCO which began on March 18, schools were closed to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
The government only approved the reopening of schools in stages this month.
But during their time away from the international school in Shah Alam, the scholars didn’t miss lessons as online classes were conducted daily.
Shepherdson said it was a challenge doing live classes but with the support of all the coaches and parents, it went on without a hitch.
“But now that we are back in school, we can crack on. There are still four months until the term ends. I wish everyone the best,” said Shepherdson.
