Today is the International Day of Yoga. Did you know yoga is suitable for pre-schoolers?
Knowing the benefits of yoga, it is one of the extras provided by Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School.
Yoga can help young children
* Improve emotional regulation
* Boost self-esteem
* Increase awareness and mindfulness
* Improve concentration and memory
* Develops strength and flexibility
That is why the school introduced yoga lessons in March with pre-primary coach Marissa Juanita Hendroff leading the little ones through the sessions.
She said the response by the scholars was fantastic, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she had to limit the number of participants for each session.
“We only did it for a short while due to the closure of schools following the nationwide lockdown, but the kids loved it,” said Hendroff.
“As teachers, we also practice yoga, which was why we wanted to introduce it to the pre-schoolers.
“We have seen its benefits to our mind and body. As such, we decided to explore yoga together with the kids.
However, she said she has not conducted online yoga classes following the lockdown as it was difficult to correct the scholars’ positions remotely.
“Since they are so young, I need to be in the room with them to ensure there are no mistakes.”
She, however, hopes that lessons can resume once it’s safe to return to school.
“Yoga helps us to be peaceful, be calm and achieve Zen. It helps not only with one’s flexibility, but keeps our mind and body connected,” said Hendroff.
“It also provides a sense of serenity and keeps us close to nature.”
