The sparkle in Dr Veronica Shepherdson’s eyes told its own story, as the co-founder of Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School welcomed back the scholars to the first day of school on Thursday.
Dr Shepherdson visited each classroom and cheered on the secondary scholars who had a “healthy” start to the new school year.
Physical Education coach Mohd Ruszaiman Mohd Idrus and his team pushed the secondary scholars to their limits with several sessions of activities that included flag football, futsal, badminton, basketball, and other exercises on Thursday and Friday.
The activities were at the indoor sports arena and will resume at the Sime Darby Field in Bukit Jelutong this week.
“After a month away (for the year-end holidays), it is good for the scholars to start the new school year with some exercise,” said Dr Shepherdson.
“I enjoyed seeing them having fun, sweating it out. I also spoke to some scholars who, unfortunately, sat out the activities as they were not feeling well.
“Our school is growing, but I try to make it a point to speak to all the scholars. By having an open line of communication, we get to understand each other better.”
Ruszaiman said he and his team planned to push the scholars hard, as this year’s Sports Day is on May 30.
“We have four months to get them ready for the big day. We do not have time to waste,” said Ruszaiman.
Meanwhile, Dr Shepherdson said the school year began two days earlier for her team as she conducted training and team-building exercises on Jan 2 and 3.
She said GOTS International School is like a lamp, and every new thing learnt makes the light brighter.
“We had a lot of fun and laughter during the team-building exercise. We played games that taught us about responsibility and teamwork,” she said.
“We cannot remain stagnant if we want to help build the leaders of tomorrow. The coaches have to improve. That is where the training comes in.
“We have these training sessions twice a year, so the coaches remain sharp and effective. This will benefit our scholars.”
She added that she looked forward to a more productive 2024 as several activities, like the highly successful Entrepreneurs’ Fair, would be held earlier in the year.
“We have spread out our activities this year to give them better focus,” said Dr Shepherdson.
“Last year’s Entrepreneurs’ Fair was a huge success, even though it was late in the year.
“This year, we will organise it in March.”
