Keira Foo appears reserved, but her inner performer comes alive on stage.

One of Global Oak Tree Scholars (GOTS) International School’s top cheerleaders, Keira is also a national athlete and represented the country in the International Federation of Aesthetic Group Gymnastics World and Junior Gymnastics and Aesthetic Group Gymnastics Four Continents championships in The Baluan Sholak Palace, Almaty, Kazakhstan, from Nov 24-26.

The national coaches included gymnastics legends Thye Chee Kiat and Durratun Nashihin Rosli.

Keira, 14, has been a gymnast since she was six. Her first taste of an international tournament was in 2018, in the Asia Pacific Cup in China. A year later, it was the World Cup in Singapore, and in June, she was in South Korea for the Shine Cup.

“Our team finished fourth at the Four Continents Championship, and 11th at the World Juniors,” said Keira, a Year 10 scholar at the Shah Alam-based international school.

“Although I am shy, I come alive when performing with my peers on the carpet or cheering with the GOTS International School’s cheerleading team.

“Somehow, when I perform, I become a different person as I can express myself.”

Keira said performing with the GOTS International School’s cheerleading squad at the opening ceremony of the inaugural International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Asia-Oceania Flag Football Continental Championships in October was a daunting but enjoyable experience.

“It was the biggest opportunity for all of us to show what we could do. I am glad that it was well-received. Many people at the stadium congratulated us after our performance,” said Keira.

“That is why I love my school. Although studies are important, the Chill Out programmes allow us to show off our artistic side.”

The Chill Out lessons are GOTS International School’s creative and innovative approach to extra-curricular activities.

It includes ballet, hip-hop dance, Taiko drums, and speech and drama.

Asked where she sees herself in the next five years, Keira said: “Hopefully, I will still compete for Malaysia and be in university to finish my education.

“I hope to compete in a few more World Championships before I retire.”
